Launch of the AXA - Newcastle Chair on Longevity and Healthy Active Life

October 08, 2010

The Newcastle University and the AXA Research Fund linked up to create a permanent Chair on Longevity and Healthy Active Life. Endowed with 750,000 euros, this permanent chair will be held by Professor Carol Jagger.

Life expectancy is still increasing in the UK at the rate of around 2 years each decade. This is a remarkable achievement but it is often viewed negatively, not least because of the greater numbers of those aged 85 years and older, the so-called'oldest old', with their high rates of age-related diseases and disability. However we have little firm evidence of whether the extra years of life we are now enjoying are spent in good or poor health and the impact that the greater numbers of the oldest old will have on health and care services.

In recognition of its leading role in ageing research world-wide, the AXA Research Fund has recently funded Professor Carol Jagger to a permanent Chair in the Institute for Ageing and Health at Newcastle University to further research on understanding trends, causes and consequences of Longevity and Healthy Active Life for future health and social care policy.
