In Sub-Saharan Africa, a large portion of the population does not have bank accounts and operates in the cash-only informal economy. Because inclusion into formal financial services has been reported to contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction, Dr. Muhammad Bello, of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, in Ibadan, aims to inform efforts directed at designing suitable financial products tailored to the demands of the financially excluded population of Nigeria. More specifically, the project will develop models that can describe, and consistently examine and predict consumer’s choice behaviour when faced with different financial products or policies.
